Race number 2 of the Apple Collision Centers Premier Cup Series presented by TDR Racing League took us to the Atlanta Motor Speedway for a 114 lap event around the ultra fast 1 1/2 mile quad oval last Saturday Night. Off the heels of last weeks win at Daytona, Derek Justis would set quick time with a lap of 28.629 and would lead the 33 car field to the green flag.
Tight racing would lead to some great racing, which was not without incident by any means, the most spectacular coming on lap 91 where #048 Alex Davis would make a bold move to an empty bottom lane off of turn 4 to make it 4 wide entering the “D” shaped part of the track, putting the #118 of Robert Baucom square in the crosshairs of a side by side battle between Todd Stanton and Frank Divvens causing the 3 drivers to make contact and setting off a wild crash. The race would be slowed by 11 caution flags, but when all was said and done it was Derek Justis finding victory lane for the 2nd time in 2017 with the #31 Baskin Robbins Ford. Jeremy Jeffries would bring the #8 Monster Energy Ford home 2nd. The #53 of Justin Melillo would have another solid outing placing 3rd. Alex Davis and Reaper would round out the top 5. The evenings Hard Charger Award, Blake McCandless from his 33rd starting position marched his way through the field to finish up in 7th.
Derek Justis sits atop of the points standings on the strength of his season opening 2 victories. Justin Melillo and Jeremy Jeffries are tied 3 points behind. Alex Davis is 7 points back with Gary Piccolo rounding out the top 5. The Premier Cup Series heads to Las Vegas for its annual trip next Saturday night! Qualifying for the Sin City 200 begins at 9pm!
